Concept for Teaching Theory of Composition and Form Formation

Author: Dobrina Zheleva-Martins

Abstract:

In the article, the author shares her experience of teaching the disciplines Form Formation and Theory of Composition to students of Engineering Design in the Forestry University in Sofia. The goals of the two disciplines are set out, namely: the aim of the discipline of Form Formation is to teach students the objective laws of the organization of the form and form formation in the world, knowledge attained thus far by the natural sciences. The aim of the discipline Theory of Composition is to teach students the laws of human perception, knowledge attained by the humanities. The focus is on a number of modern sciences, such as – in Form Formation – sciences of the organization of the matter in systems, structures, constructs and shapes; sciences of symmetry and rhythm; Synergetics; fractal geometry; bionics, etc. In Theory of Composition, these are respectively, psychology of perception, Gestalt psychology, semiotics, poetics, theory of manipulation, etc. Examples are given of the application of new teaching methods, including interactive forms of education and the organization of extracurricular events such as competitions, public readings, debating sessions, etc. The conclusions stress the importance of keeping the two disciplines up-to-date with the developments in modern science, and respectively, with the new requirements regarding design.

Aрхитектурный конкурс Architectural Competition

  • Организаторы: Central Glass Co., Ltd, Shinkenchiku-sha Co., Ltd.

Central Glass

International Architectural Design Competition

№48 Competition Theme  “Bringing the Urban Environment into Architecture”.

We have been sponsoring the Central Glass International Architectural Design Competition every year since 1966.

Judged by architects renowned for expertise in their field, the competition has sparked interest among students who aspire to be architects as well as among professionals working both at architectural firms and in the design divisions of general contractors.

The competition became an international event in 1976, when overseas entries were first invited. We wish this competition will be an opportunity to think of desirable society and environment at the present day in which pursuit of economic efficiency and rationality as well as preservation of natural environment and conservation of historic and traditional culture is required.

Without question, outstanding architecture contributes to improving the urban environment. But various approaches are possible.

Some architecture assimilates itself to the city. Another approach is to stimulate the environment through designs that stand out.

There is also architecture that reads the urban context and aims for harmony. The stance that architecture adopts toward the urban environment affects the nature of the relationship and the results.

Against that background, we invite proposals for “Bringing the Urban Environment into Architecture”. The process of working out a design is easier when thinking only of architecture inside a closed site. But it is vital to think of architecture together with the surrounding environment. When one building is opened to the city and generates effects that are evident to all, then subsequent buildings will also be open to the city, with the result that the urban environment is revitalized. It is also important for architecture to be sustainable, from the way it is built to the way it is used. Consequently it can also be said that the passage of time is another important element.

Archi-World® Academy Awards:

the largest worldwide contest for the architects of tomorrow in cooperation with Messe München (BAU 2011 & BAU 2013)!

Info:   http://www.awacademy.org/

About the Archi-World®Academy

Concept

Having gained significant experience in this field and interviewed many students, Archi-Europe came to the conclusion that the most significant award for students in architecture definitely is a top class traineeship in a leading architecture practice.

This is the reason why we asked all our members of the Jury, in the framework of the Archi-World® Academy Awards, to give the opportunity to the 12 winning students (all carefully evaluated by the Jury) to perform a traineeship in their practice for a minimum 4 months stay.

AEG_logodef

Archi-Europe, is since 1997, the largest European network in direct communication towards European architects (currently over 187.000 architect members) and organizes on a regular basis international contests and competitions in the field of architecture.

Among the most recent events there are:

– The launching ceremony (November 2005) of the Archi-Students network during Batimat 2005 edition: www.archi-students.org  counts today over 45.000 students

– The first International Congress for students in architecture including a contest that registered over 700 entries (January 2007 – Bau trade fair in Munich)

-The Archi-BAU Awards 2009 for architects and students in architecture – jointly organized with the Bau trade fair in Munich. Categories: green building, façades and interior design

On May 10, 2007, Archi-Europe® launched ArchiWorld® with the aim of welcoming all active architects from all corners of the world. In the framework of this enlargement, we opened, last month of September, a representation office in Moscow.

International Conference

MATERIAL STRATEGIES – PLANT ARCHITECTURE

3rd-4th OCTOBER 2013

ARQUITECTURA ESCUELA POLITÉCNICA SUPERIOR

UNIVERSIDAD FRANCISCO DE VITORIA

MADRID, SPAIN

PRESENTATION

Plants have been widely used as building materials both within different vernacular traditions around the world and as part of more recent proposals that attempt to take advantage of their insulating properties an their low ecological footprint. Within vernacular architecture, the use of plants as building components can be traced from the mudhifs in Irak or the hay reinforcement of rammed earth walls, up to the green roofs of Asturian teitos or Swedish stugas. Now, these vernacular techniques are being rediscovered and becoming updated in architectural designs that seek to profit from their thermal qualities, their availability and their low environmental impact. Bamboo and reed have been used in recent projects such as the Spanish Pavillion in Shangai (EMBT, Barcelona) or at the Social Housing in Carabanchel (Foreign Office Architects), London), while pressed straw has been used in experimental proposals, such as the single family houses by Wiggleswoth & Till in London or by Felix Jerusalem in Eschenz (Switzerland).

The availability of these materials and techniques has enabled their use in social housing projects where more sophisticated technologies are not possible. Such is the case of the Quincha Prefabricada building system, developed by the Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Normalización de la Vivienda in Perú, or the Domocaña system put forward by the Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de ingeniería de Lima (Peru. Further, Vietnamese architect Vo Trong Nghia has designed a modular prototype in bamboo for the poor at the Mekong delta, underlining the social dimension of these techniques.

A thorough study of the topic is yet to be done, in order to establish affinities between the different practices and to help analyse its technical, social and architectural potential. In order to explore the interplay of aesthetics and materiality in plant building, we seek submissions from architects, landscape architects, building historians, engineers, etc. interested in the conference topic.

The conference will be organized around two themes:

a. Vernacular traditions

b. Contemporary techniques
