WRITINGS IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION
Research by Design
The EAAE Prize aims to stimulate original writing on the subject of architectural education in order to improve the quality of architectural teaching in Europe. Organized bi-annually the competition focuses
public attention on outstanding written work selected by an international jury.
The first EAAE Prize was awarded in 1991.
The EAAE invites all EAAE member schools of architecture and all
individual members of EAAE to participate in the EAAE Prize 2011-2012.
In the Fall of 2011 all member schools will receive a poster of the
competition. The material and general conditions of the competition will also be available on the EAAE homepage: www.eaae.be
EAAE PRIZE 2011-2012
Sponsored European Association for Architectural Education
THEME FOR THE EAAE PRIZE 2011-2012
Writings in Architectural Education
Research by Design
Over the past ten years ‘Research by Design’ has generated many challenging and interesting discussions both inside and outside academia, and almost all programmes in architecture have been influenced by the theme. Despite the many discussions, no one has been able truly to define what research by design is. In the more established research fields outside the creative disciplines, research by design in architecture is neither directly overlooked nor openly accepted, but in a positive way, it has opened up for new types of collaboration between design professions and other related fields. In addition, it has brought about a focus on the intuitive creative act itself and its validity within research in architecture.
Research by Design has gone in many directions, sparked many questions and been given many different names. Can studio teaching be seen as research? What about spatial experimentation at a scale of 1:1? Or a concentration on deeper understanding of a particular material and its structural capacity – can this be defined as research? These are just some of many questions that have caused debate. In each case where there was a lack of definition, as well as a lack of precision, the new programmes have broadened definitions in relation to architectural research.
The meaning of the term “research” is shifting, as schools of architecture begin to acknowledge more widely and explicitly its importance for the future. This may well lead to more open and generous definitions of research, of teaching, and of design. However, in that case it becomes crucial to answer the following question, as the theme for the EAAE Prize for Writing in Architectural Education 2011-2012:
What has architectural education achieved during this past decade as regards research by design? Which new experience and insight has research by design generated, and what impact has the new content had in relation to architectural education?
BACKGROUND
This is the fifth time that the EAAE has had the pleasure of inviting teaching staff members to participate in the Competition for the EAAE Prize, Writings in Architectural Education. The 2011-2012 Prize is sponsored by MONTANA.
THE AIM
The aim of the EAAE Prize is to stimulate new pedagogical initiatives, and to communicate these initiatives as related to the broad scope of teaching and research.
The EAAE Prize is open to all teaching staff members, part-time or fulltime, of EAAE member schools of architecture as well as to all teachers from UIA-approved schools of architecture, provided they are individual members of EAAE. Teachers wishing to obtain individual membership should contact the EAAE secretariat at: aeea@eaae.be.
THE TASK
The EAAE Prize calls for papers with the capacity to improve, challenge and enable a creative debate on architectural education related to the theme, Research by Design. Both theoretically and practically oriented papers are welcome.
SUBMISSION FORMAT
Submissions may take the form of reports or critical reviews dealing with conceptual or methodological developments that make a significant contribution to the theme of the competition.
Documents must be in English out of consideration for the jury’s work.
Contributions should be sent electronically to the Organising Committee in PDF format only. The length should be limited to 33,000 characters, ie. about 6,000 words; illustrations must have a quality suited for electronic and paper publication. The identity of the author must not be revealed in the PDF file.
All material submitted must be original ie. neither published nor entered for publication at the time of entry. The Organising Committee will ensure that the contributions are sent to the jury anonymously. The material must have arrived at the Organising Committee no later than 3 February 2012.
TIMETABLE
The Competition is divided into two phases. In the first phase, the submissions will be evaluated anonymously by the jury and 10-15 papers will be selected. The authors of these papers will be encouraged to participate in a workshop for discussion and criticism. Clearly, in the second phase the anonymity is lifted, and the participants will thus have the opportuniity to meet and discuss with other selected authors.
The schedule for the competition is as follows:
September 2011 Announcement of the EAAE Prize 2011-2012 – Incl. web and poster
October 2011 Announcement in EAAE News Sheet/electronic

THE JURY
The scientific jury will consist of: Johannes Käferstein, Urs Hirschberg, Anne Elisabeth Toft, Per Olaf Fjeld, David Vanderburgh, Chris Younès, Luís Conceição and Jørgen Hauberg.
PRIZES
The total prize sum amounts to 10,000 Euros. The jury will distribute the prize sum with up to 6,000 Euros for the 1st prize, and between 3,000 and 1,000 Euros for the 2nd and 3rd prizes, respectively. The jury can decide to further divide the prize money or not to award certain prizes.
SUBMISSION CONDITIONS
By entering the EAAE Prize competition, the authors accept that the EAAE publishes and disseminates the awarded papers. Participants accept the terms of the prize regulations and refrain from any legal action by the sole act of participating. There will be no correspondence on the awarding process.

Subject: 3rd Global Conference: Space and Place (Exploring Critical Issues)
3rd Global Conference Space and Place
Monday 3rd September – Thursday 6th September 2012
Mansfield College, Oxford, United Kingdom
Call for Papers:
Questions of space and place affect the very way in which we experience and recreate the world.
Wars are fought over both real and imagined spaces; boundaries are erected against the “Other” constructed in a lived landscape of division and disenfranchisement; and ideology constructs a national identity based upon the dialectics of inclusion and exclusion. The construction of space and place is also a fundamental aspect of the creative arts either through the art of reconstruction of a known space or in establishing a relationship between the audience and the performance. Politics, power and knowledge are also fundamental components of space as is the relationship between visibility and invisibility.
This new inter- and multi-disciplinary conference project seeks to explore these and other topics and open up a dialogue about the politics and practices of space and place. We seek submissions from a range of disciplines including archaeology, architecture, urban geography, the visual and creative arts, philosophy and politics and also actively encourage practioners and non-academics with an interest in the topic to participate.
We welcome traditional papers, preformed panels of papers, workshop proposals and other forms of performance – recognising that different disciplines express themselves in different
mediums. Submissions are sought on any aspect of space and place, including the following:
1. Theorising Space and Place
~Philosophies and space and place
~Surveillance, sight and the panoptic structures and spaces of contemporary life
~Rhizomatics and/or postmodernist constructions of space as a “meshwork of paths” (Ingold: 2008)
~The relationship between spatiality and temporality/space as a temporal-spatial event (Massey: 2005)
~The language and semiotics of space and place
2. Situated Identities
~Gendered spaces including the tension between domestic and public spheres
~Work spaces and hierarchies of power
~Geographies and archaeologies of space including Orientalism and Occidentalism
~Ethnic spaces/ethnicity and space
~Disabled spaces/places
~Queer places and spaces
3. Contested spaces
~The politics and ideology of constructions and discourses of space and place including the construction of gated communities as a response to real/imagined terrorism.
~The relationship between power, knowledge and the construction of place and space
~Territorial wars, both real and imagined.
~The relationship between the global and the local
~Barriers, obstructions and disenfranchisement in the construction of lived spaces
~Space and place from colonisation to globalisation
~Real and imagined maps/cartographies of place
~Transnational and translocal places
4. Representations of place and space
~Embodied/disembodied spaces
~Lived spaces and the architecture of identity
~Haunted spaces/places and non-spaces
~Set design and the construction of space in film, television and theatre
~Authenticity and the reproduction/representation of place in the creative arts
~Technology and developments in the representation of space including new media technologies and 3D technologies of viewing
~Future cities/futurology and space
~Representations of the urban and the city in the media and creative arts
~Space in computer games
Papers on any other topic related to the theme will also be considered.
This project will run concurrently with our project on Reframing Punishment – we welcome any papers considering the problems or addressing issues on Reframing Punishment and Space and Place for a cross-over panel. We also welcome pre-formed panels on any aspect of Space or Place or in relation to crossover panel(s).
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 16th March 2012. If an abstract is accepted for the conference, a full draft paper should be submitted by Friday 22nd June 2012. 300 word
abstracts should be submitted to the Organising Chairs; abstracts may be in Word, WordPerfect, or RTF formats, following this order: a) author(s), b) affiliation, c) email address, d)title of abstract, e) body of abstract, f) up to 10 keywords.
E-mails should be entitled: SP Abstract Submission
Please use plain text (Times Roman 12) and abstain from using footnotes and any special formatting, characters or emphasis (such as bold, italics or underline). Please note that a Book of Abstracts is planned for the end of the year. All accepted abstracts will be included in this publication. We acknowledge receipt and answer all paper proposals submitted. If you do not receive a reply from us in a week you should assume we did not receive your proposal; it might be lost in cyberspace! We suggest, then, to look for an alternative electronic route or resend.
