ENGRAVINGS AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION IN RECONSTRUCTION OF ARCHITECTURAL OBJECTS

Dobrina Zheleva-Martins, PhD       Summary

The subject of the article is the following case – whether it is lawful to use artworks, in this case engravings, as a source of information for the reconstruction of architectural sites – monuments of culture.

There is a critical analysis of an article by Assoc. Prof. Iva Doseva in which the author claims that it is “methodologically wrong to use artworks as a “reliable source” for restoring the image of architectural objects that have reached us as ruins.” Doseva looks at some examples from the Bulgarian restoration practice.

In order for these allegations to be reasonably refuted here are analyzed the specific examples of images that the author gives, as well as the one of Philipopolis / Plovdiv presented in a fragment of a frieze titled  “Customs and Fashions of the Turks”, engraved by Pieter I Coecke Van Aelst (1502-1550).

The opposite is proved – the wide information base, including artistic works, is not only legitimate but also imperative for achieving maximum, including not only physical but also spiritual authenticity of the restored architectural site.

Keywords: artworks; engravings; reconstruction; architectural sites; monuments of culture.
