NATIONAL MUSEUM COMPLEX – PHASE I

Almost 4 years after winning the international competition for the design of the Bulgarian National Museum Complex in collaboration with museum consulting firm Museoplan, Yanko Apostolov Architects unveil the completed Phase I of their 280,000 sf (25,000m2) museum scheme. A formal certificate of completion was issued on May 29.
Funded through the European Regional Redevelopment Fund the museum is the largest investment in a cultural project in the country after Bulgaria’s accession to the EU.
Situated in the historic heart of Sofia, on St Alexander Nevsky Square adjacent to the National Cathedral, the museum will house the country’s two most valuable art collections – that of the National Art Gallery and the National Gallery for Foreign Art – containing Bulgarian, European, Asian and African art spanning several centuries.
The National Museum Complex will be the leading player in a larger masterplan aiming to create a cluster of art institutions in the capital’s cultural hub.
The architecture is an expression of the museum’s many functional needs and a response to a complex historical site. Located in a heritage preservation zone, the proposal strikes a fine balance between optimizing space use and respect for the urban setting.
The project organizes the museum functions around an open air sculpture court that will act as a focal point and a symbolic heart of the institution. The court synthesizes key features of Sofia’s downtown into a single entity – the intimacy of the inner courtyards, use of the much loved Vratza limestone and the popular in the city maple trees. This new outdoor cultural space will be used for art installation and special events or simply enjoyed by visitors as a quiet retreat.
The completed Phase I of the complex will house the museum’s permanent exposition and creates much needed capacity for public programs, administrative office, restoration laboratories and art storage.
Construction on the last Phase II of the museum (about ¼ of its overall size of the complex) will start later this year. Although government funding for a portion of the construction is allocated, completion of the museum’s final phase remains subject to further fundraising. This last component will house the temporary exhibition galleries, a research library, an education center and a large public atrium that will tie the museum’s different building blocks into a single organism.
