WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY 2013
2013 World Architecture Day
By choosing CULTURE-ARCHITECTURE as the theme for the 2013 World Architecture Day, the UIA hopes to generate a wellspring of interpretations and illustrations of architects’diversity, richness, imagination, and capacity for invention through their designs and realisations.
UIA also hopes to affiliate its members with the UNESCO declaration entitled Placing Culture at the Heart of Sustainable Development Policies, that was drafted in Hangzhou, China, last May.
The UIA invites its members to celebrate World Architecture Day on
7 October 2013, by creating events that highlight culture as a vital part of the architectural process and
illustrate its potential to help resolve the challenges architects face in the practice of their profession.

UIA 2014 DURBAN
CALL FOR PAPERS
Connections, diversity, integration, resilience, sustainability, responsibility, humility; these are the principles that will guide the dynamic, challenging and inspiring debates during the UIA Congress in Durban (3-7 August 2014)
One of the foremost ambitions of the UIA congress is to promote the idea that the city is an
ecosystem at the service of all segments of the population.
Scientific papers will illustrate the congress theme:
“ARCHITECTURE OTHERWHERE” and the three sub-themes:
· RESILIENCE, in terms of poverty alleviation, space, geo-political economies.
· ECOLOGY encompassing the notions of time, evolution, systems, and environment.
· VALUES, notably those related to professional practice and architectural education.
PROCEDURE AND SELECTION CRITERIA
– Submission will be made online via a dedicated platform.
– Abstracts, written in English, must not exceed 300 words and must not include any
illustrations.
– Abstract submission deadline: 31 October 2013.
Abstracts will be double, blind peer-reviewed and assessed in terms of the following
criteria:
◦Relevance to the congress themes and sub-themes
◦Originality
◦Academic rigour
◦Contribution to broadening knowledge

The WAN Urban Design Award 2013 acknowledges the significant contribution that architects, urban designers and city planners have made to both the aesthetic and living conditions of our cities. Open to realised and concept-only projects, this category celebrates design excellence and innovative thinking in several sectors, including landscaping, public realm areas, masterplans, waterfront developments, utility buildings and urban regeneration schemes.
Urban vision requires urban visionaries. So we’ve selected a handful of the most highly esteemed judges to assess the entries, each of whom has considerable experience within this field. Winners can expect to have their work showcased globally to our network of industry players, which often leads to an increase in commissions and commercial partnerships.

Sustainable Building of the Year 2013
About the awards
The WAN AWARDS Sustainable Building of the Year category is a major international competition and is the penultimate of our six bi-monthly ‘Excellence in Design’ series by sector for 2013.
Eligibility
The Sustainable Building of the Year award covers all the main sectors; education / healthcare / civic / urban design / commercial / residential. Entries will close on 31 October. If you have designed a building in of one of these sectors that has been completed during the last three full calendar years, (on or after 01 January 2010), you can now enter for the WAN AWARDS Sustainable Building of the Year category 2013.
Judging criteria
The jury will be looking for projects where the architects have holistically embraced sustainability without compromising the usual qualities found in good design: originality, innovation, form and dialogue
