WAN Correspondent Ross Sturley travels to Barcelona to bring you the lowdown on WAF

This week, around 1,000 architects gathered for the World Festival of Architecture in Barcelona. It was an energising collection – over 250 buildings were presented, showing all aspects of the architect’s art. Since most of the world’s 1.2m architects could not be there, we report on here on the winners, and some of the more interesting losers.

The event is an interesting combination of collegiality and competition. Delegates are all architects together, and united against the rest, proud of each other’s achievements. But there is a clear competition – between individuals, and between countries. Swedish judge Dan Halleman commented on the Bjarke Ingels designed Danish Pavilion at this year’s Shanghai Expo ‘do you think you perhaps portray Denmark as too clean?’

The crits are not uniformly well-attended, and some certainly not as well as they deserve.  The overall winner, MAXXI, the modern art museum in Rome designed by Zaha Hadid and 12 years in the making. It was a vaguely predictable win, and felt disappointing for that, but perhaps it shouldn’t. The building is a triumph over considerable adversity, and a work of art in its own right….
